Open & Endovascular Treatments

When an aneurysm occurs in the aorta and it is growing or there is a tear or rupture, surgery is often recommended. This may be accomplished as either endovascular treatment or open surgery. We have the leading vascular surgeons in Bergen County with the skills and equipment to perform the procedure you need to repair an aortic aneurysm.

In open treatment, the doctor will make a large incision to expose the aorta in the abdomen or thoracic region where the aneurysm occurs. Once the aorta is exposed, a graft is used to replace the damaged area and provide a strong, lasting replacement that will last the rest of your life.

Like most surgical treatment, the open treatment for aneurysm is performed in a hospital and requires a stay of at least five to seven days. Initially, you may be in the intensive care unit where you can be monitored around the clock. Once you go home, you will have regular follow-up visits to determine how quickly you are able to resume previous activities, including returning to work.

Endovascular treatment is a newer method of aneurysm repair that is less invasive than open surgery. During this treatment, the Hackensack vascular surgeon will make small incisions in your groin. A tiny catheter is guided through the incision and the aortic artery until it reaches the aneurysm. A graft is placed into the diseased area of the artery, creating a strong support that allows blood to flow through without coming into contact with the damaged wall.
