What is Dialysis?

The kidneys are natural filters that remove toxins and waste from the blood while also contributing to the production of blood cells. Peritoneal Dialysis – With this type of dialysis, the abdomen is filled with a special type of cleaning solution where it cleans the blood.

The surgeon will need to create an access prior to your first peritoneal dialysis session in which a catheter is placed into a small surgical incision near the belly button. The access stays in place throughout the time you will be undergoing dialysis. The cleaning solution will be inserted through this access where it will pull the waste and excess fluids into it. The process usually takes between four and six hours. When the cleaning solution is drained from your body, the waste and excess fluids are removed with it.

Hemodialysis –Prior to the first session of hemodialysis, the vascular specialist in Hackensack will create an AV (arteriovenous) fistula in which an artery is surgically connected to a vein to provide ample blood flow during long-term dialysis treatments. There are other methods of creating an entrance that may be used for dialysis, but the AV fistula is considered the Gold Standard procedure due to its durability and a lower risk of complications. During dialysis, the blood flows slowly through the machine so that the filter can efficiently remove waste and excess fluids while retaining the appropriate minerals your needs. Once the blood is filtered, it is returned to your body.
